Russell (Rusty) A. Evans

Dr. Russell (Rusty) Evans is an Assistant Professor of Indigenous Management and Leadership at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. An Indigenous scholar and member of Teme Augama Anishinabek (formerly Temagami First Nation), he brings a unique perspective at the intersection of public sector accounting, Indigenous governance, and financial accountability. He earned his PhD in Social and Behavioural Accounting from the Smith School of Business at Queen's University in 2018.

In addition to his academic work, Russell brings practical governance experience through his service on the Finance and Audit Committee for Teme Augama Anishinabek, where he works alongside community leadership, finance staff, and external auditors to support sound financial oversight and governance. He has also advised Indigenous governments and organizations on governance, strategic planning, and economic development initiatives through his consulting work. As Co-Director of the Natural Capital Valuation Hub, he collaborates with researchers, governments, and Indigenous partners to advance approaches to environmental accounting and valuation that reflect diverse ways of understanding and stewarding the natural world.

Russell is committed to strengthening relationships between Indigenous communities, governments, and the accounting profession, and is passionate about ensuring Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully reflected in public sector financial reporting and standard setting.

Outside his professional work, Russell enjoys staying active through community hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and softball leagues, competing in masters athletics, and singing with a local community choir.
