Lilani Kumaranayake is Associate Deputy Minister with the Nova Scotia Department of Finance and Treasury Board. She provides strategic leadership to the province’s fiscal arrangements, budget, and fiscal plan development, taxation, economic analysis, and the department’s policy, legislation, and regulatory initiatives including financial institution and pensions.

She is an economist with over 35 years’ experience. Previous positions include Executive Director Fiscal Policy, Economics, and Budgetary Planning with the Nova Scotia Department of Finance and Treasury Board; Executive Director of Strategy, Policy, and Planning with the Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, Province of Nova Scotia; Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University; Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London, U.K.); and College Supervisor at the University of Cambridge (U.K.). She has worked in over 15 countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, and has served as Technical Advisor to international organizations such as the World Health Organization, World Bank, and UNAIDS. Lilani has contributed as an author to more than 50 publications in books, policy, and scientific journals.

Lilani is a member of many local, national, and international boards. She currently serves as Past Chair of the Board for the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia; Treasurer and board member of Swim Nova Scotia; member of the Board and member of the Audit, Actuarial, and Risk Committee for the Public Service Superannuation Plan Trustee Inc; and on the Board of Directors for the Halifax Youth Foundation.

She is a Swimming Canada—certified Masters Swimmers official, working at all competition levels in Canada.
