Gary Hannaford served for most of his career in leadership roles for the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and Manitoba. With the merger of the three professional accounting bodies in Manitoba he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the CPA Manitoba, the position from which he retired in June 2016.

Gary was a member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants from January 2012 to December 2017. He chaired the Safeguards Task Force from 2015 to 2017, which resulted in a significantly enhanced conceptual framework for the Code. In addition, he was a member of the Planning Committee and a member of the Long Association Task Force of IESBA. Previously he chaired the Non-Assurance Services Task Force and the Emerging Issues Committee. He also served as a member of the Non-Assurance Services Working Group for a year following his retirement from IESBA.

Gary also served as the Chair of CPA Canada’s Public Trust Committee (PTC), which is responsible for overseeing the regulatory structures and processes across provincial jurisdictions in Canada. 

A graduate of the University of Waterloo, Gary became a CA in Ontario in 1975 and in Manitoba in 1995. He was awarded an FCA in Ontario in 1985 and in Manitoba in 2000. In 2018, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by CPA Manitoba.
