Volunteer Opportunity – Public Sector Accounting Discussion Group

February 13, 2023 News, Volunteer Opportunity

Do you want to join a network of experts and be ahead of the curve on public sector accounting?

Are you interested in assisting PSAB on issues related to the application of the CPA Canada Public Sector Accounting (PSA) Handbook, as well as other issues of concern with respect to public sector financial reporting, including emerging issues?

If so, the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) needs you on its Public Sector Accounting Discussion Group! The Board is seeking two new members to join this Group, starting in June 2023. The Board is also looking for expressions of interest to join the Group in 2024, when additional members will be required.

About the Group

The purpose of the Group is to assist PSAB regarding issues arising on the application of the PSA Handbook, as well as other issues of concern with respect to public sector financial reporting, including emerging issues and any issues on which PSAB seeks advice. However, the Group will not issue pronouncements, other communications, or offer interpretations of standards. The Group will also gather information in order to advise PSAB on priorities and possible agenda items for its consideration.

This is done by:

  • maintaining a public forum at which application issues arising from the current or future use of the PSA Handbook are discussed;
  • discussing emerging issues and topics related to PSAB and consider their impacts on public sector entities; and
  • reporting key discussion points and recommendations for consideration to PSAB.

Group members consist of individuals with a range of backgrounds and experience, including preparers, users and auditors of government and government organization financial reports prepared in accordance with the PSA Handbook.

What’s in it for you

  • Stay ahead of the curve – bring your own perspectives on application issues involving the PSA Handbook and learn about potential impacts of such issues on public sector entities.
  • Be in the know – stay current on emerging issues.
  • Gain new perspectives – broaden your understanding of how Public Sector Accounting Standards can impact public sector entities.
  • Give back to your profession – share your in-depth knowledge and experience to contribute to Canada’s prominent role in setting public sector accounting standards.
  • Be a part of a network – form connections in a network of public sector accounting experts.

About the role

  • An ideal candidate will:
    • have an in-depth understanding of public sector accounting concepts and current financial reporting issues;
    • be able to discuss a broad range of financial reporting issues encountered by public sector entities and government organizations; and
    • respond effectively to issues brought forth to the Group by being attentive to concerns and feeling comfortable in offering insightful comments consistent with the intent and objectives the standards established.
  • Members will also be required to have:
    • a commitment to PSAB objectives;
    • technical knowledge;
    • relevant experience;
    • the ability to consider the practical aspects of issues being considered; and
    • identify issues arising within your own experience, as well as discuss issues identified by others.
  • Appointment effective May 15, 2023, for a three-year term, with the possibility of renewing for a second term.
  • The Discussion Group expects to meet twice a year and will consider the need for a third meeting if a high volume of submissions is received. Currently, members may participate via video conference while one meeting per year will be held in a hybrid setting (option for members to participate in-person in Toronto.)
  • The working language of the Group is English.
  • Out-of-pocket expenses, including travel costs, will be reimbursed.

PSAB continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion on its Board and throughout its committees. Lasting change can only happen if we all take action to address systemic racism and structural inequality, while creating opportunities for underrepresented communities. As such, we encourage nominations for Indigenous Peoples, racialized persons, women, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, and persons with disabilities. If you require a disability related accommodation to participate in our volunteer recruitment process, please email us [email protected] and we will be happy to work with you to meet your needs as they relate to interviewing for this volunteer position.

PSAB encourages all qualified candidates to apply online. To be considered for appointment as a Group member, please submit an expression of interest and a CV outlining the following:

  • Your interest in this role
  • Your strengths and capabilities relevant to the role
