TORONTO, ON February 13, 2019 – The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) is pleased to announce the extension of the term of the Chair of the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB).
Linda F. Mezon, FCPA, FCA, CPA (MI), CGMA has been the AcSB’s Chair since July 1, 2013. Her second term, which was originally set to end March 31, 2021, has been extended to June 30, 2023.This means that Ms. Mezon will serve ten years as Chair of the AcSB, ensuring continuity at a time of significant activity in accounting standard setting, both globally and in Canada.
“The future of private sector accounting standards setting in Canada is in very capable hands” said Peter Jewett, AcSOC Chair and former senior counsel at Torys LLP, where he practiced corporate and securities law.
“Globally, there are a number of important standards that are currently being addressed. AcSOC believes that by extending Linda’s term of service to ten years, Canada will be best positioned to influence standard setting internationally, building on the strong momentum already achieved. With Linda’s leadership, the AcSB and its stakeholders will have the continuity of leadership needed to navigate through the Board’s next strategic planning period.”
Ms. Mezon has over 14 years of experience as a standard setter, including the period encompassing the adoption in Canada of IFRS® Standards and development of accounting standards for private enterprises and not-for-profit organizations.
The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) is an independent, volunteer body that serves the public interest by overseeing and providing input into the activities of the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) and the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB).
The Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) is an independent body with the authority to establish accounting standards for use by all Canadian entities outside the public sector. The AcSB serves the public interest by establishing standards for financial reporting by all Canadian private sector entities and by contributing to the development of internationally accepted financial reporting standards.
