Nancy Cheng is a former public sector executive with 30 years of management experience in Canadian legislative auditing. She chairs the Board of Trustees at icddr,b, (an international public health research organization based in Bangladesh) of which Canada is a core donor.
Nancy chairs a Departmental Audit Committee (DAC) of a Government of Canada department and is also a DAC member of another department. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) of Canada and currently serves as its Vice Chair.
Nancy was an Assistant Auditor General in the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG). Since 2014, she co-led the Performance Audit Practice for the Auditor General Reports to Parliament. In addition to managing the Practice, she provided oversight to performance audits for a wide portfolio of departments and agencies and several subject matters cross government. Her recent experience also included responsibility over audits of the Public Accounts of Canada and financial audits of multiple departments and agencies, several Crown corporations and two United Nations organizations.
Nancy served for five years as a member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (now CPA Ontario), and took on the role of Treasurer. She served ten years on its Applications Committee and was Vice Chair then Chair for the last four years. Nancy chaired CPA Magazine’s Editorial Advisory Board and served seven years on the CPA Canada Information Management and Technology Advisory Committee.
Nancy has lectured at Algonquin College and taught auditing at the University of Ottawa as a part-time professor. She also served as a member of the Board of Governors of Algonquin College and the Board’s Executive Committee and chaired its Audit and Risk Management Committee from 2013 to 2018.
Nancy joined the icddr,b Board of Trustees in 2018 and since January 2020, she has been the Chair of the Board. Before then, she was the Vice-Chair of the icddr,b Finance and Audit Committee.
Before joining the OAG, Nancy was a Computer Audit Manager with a large accounting firm, where she articled and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (now CPA).
In March 2000, Nancy was awarded the Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (FCPA).
