AASOC Announces New AASB Chair, Vice-Chair

TORONTO, ON March 11, 2016 – The Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council (AASOC) is pleased to announce new leadership of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB).
Effective April 1, 2016 and appointed for two-year terms, the AASB will now be led by new Chair, Darrell Jensen, CPA, CA and Vice-Chair, Fred Pries, Ph D, CPA, CA.
“It has been an honour to have served the AASB as its Chair working alongside Darrell for the past two years. It is with the utmost confidence that I hand over the reins to him and Fred,” said Cathy MacGregor, CPA, CA, National Director of Assurance Quality & Standards, Grant Thornton LLP and outgoing AASB Chair. “Under Darrell and Fred’s leadership, the AASB will be undertaking an ambitious five-year strategic plan that will continue to focus on ensuring high-quality standards and implementation material meet the needs of our stakeholders.”
Mr. Jensen has been an AASB member since 2010 and previously served as its Vice-Chair. As a partner in the National Accounting and Assurance Practice at Ernst & Young LLP, he has worked in Halifax, Edmonton and Toronto auditing public and private companies in a variety of industries, as well as not-for-profit organizations.
An AASB member since 2012, Mr. Pries is currently an associate professor in the Department of Business at the University of Guelph. Before joining academia, he was a partner in the national office of KPMG where he dealt with complex accounting, auditing and professional ethics issues.
The Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council (AASOC) is an independent, volunteer body established in 2002 by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (now Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada). It serves the public interest by overseeing and providing input into the activities of the AASB. Reporting to the public and consisting of prominent leaders from business and regulators, AASOC’s responsibilities include appointing AASB members, providing input on strategic priorities and evaluating the performance of the AASB.
The Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) is responsible for setting Canadian Auditing Standards (CASs) for financial statement audits, and other assurance and related services standards. Final standards are issued in the CPA Canada Handbook – Assurance.
